A Celebration of American Song

THOMASTON - The Waterbury Chorale, which includes members from the greater Waterbury area, including Southbury, Woodbury, Watertown , Litchfield, Thomaston, Bristol and Torrington, has been preparing its spring concert. "A Celebration of American Song."
  Two concerts on May 6 at 8 p.m. and May 7 at 3 p.m. will be held. For tickets, call the Thomaston Opera House Box Office at 283-6250 or contact any Chorale member. Tickets are $18 for general admission in advance, $15 for students and seniors in advance, and all tickets are $20 at the door.

Openings in WPCA

THOMASTON - The Republican Town Committee has openings on the WPCA  (Water Pollution Control Committee), wetlands commission, planning and zoning and other town positions. The Republican Town Committee is not only looking for Republican candidates but have decided to expand their search to qualified Independent candidates. If you are interested in filling any of these positions or have any questions about other positions available, please send a letter to the Republican Town Committee, P.O. Library Bus Trip

THOMASTON - New York City - Saturday, May 21. The bus will leave the Thomaston Public Library at 8 a.m. and travel to New York City. Stops will be made at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Radio City Music Hall and South Street Seaport. The bus will leave New York City at 7 p.m. Cost is $18 per person. Please call the library at 283-4339 to register and for further information. Payment is required at the time of registration.

Library Programs

THOMASTON - The Thomaston Public Library spring and summer programming for children ages 3-6th graders: On Tuesday evenings families with children from age 3-7 are invited to drop by the library for storytime. Stories and finger plays will be preformed. from 6:30 - 7 p.m. on April 26, May 3, 10, and 17.
  For children in grades K-3 Thursday, "Afternoon Craft Time" will be offered. Please sign up in person or call the library at 283-4339. "Afternoon Craft Time" will meet Thursday, April 28, May 5, 12, and 19 from 4-5 p.m.

  Students in grades 4-6 may attend an afternoon school series of  "Game Time." Snacks will be provided by the library from 2:30 - 3 p.m. From 3-4 p.m. a variety of games will be available. Please sign up in person or call the library at 283-4339, "Game Time" will meet Wednesdays, April 27, May 4, 11, and 18.

Drive Alive

THOMASTON - The Thomaston Senior Citizens Council has joined with the AARP to offer Drive Alive mature driving courses at the Town Hall Senior Center on Friday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both days must be attended.
  Drive Alive is a refresher course highlighting tips on driving, rules of the road and local driving problems. Classes are conducted by trained instructors. Insurance companies in Connecticut are required to provide a premium discount for a minimum of two years. The cost is $10 per person. To register, please call Stephanie Radulewicz at 283-5463.

Golf Lessons

THOMASTON- The Thomaston Recreation Department will be sponsoring golf lessons for ages 16 to adult beginning on Monday, May 9. The program will run on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays on May 9, 11, 13, 16, 18, and 20th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. each night. The first three nights will be held at the Thomaston Center School in the cafeteria and will feature the theory and fundamentals of the game. The final three nights of hands on instruction will be outside at Black Rock State Park. The instructor is Bob McQuarrie and the cost is $50 per person for the 12-hour program. Ireland Trip

THOMASTON - Travel to legendary Ireland for 15 days from June 28 to July 11, 2005. Visit Dublin, Waterford, Galway, Sligo and the Counties of Kerry and Donegal. Tour Killarney, Kilkenny, Kidare, and Blarney and Blunratty Castles. Round trip airfare, hotel accommodations, breakfast daily, 4 meals, guided sightseeing and more. $2880+ for airport taxes and fees. Optional tours are not included. Bus Rides For Vets

THOMASTON - Free Transportation is now available for Veterans to the VA Hospitals in Newington and West Haven.  Veterans are encouraged to make their appointments at the hospitals two weeks in advance and in the early morning hours. Free rides can be scheduled as follows: Newington VA Hospital - Van available from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 667-6759, West Haven VA Hospital - Van available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (203) 932-5711. Rides should be scheduled as soon as the medical appointments are confirmed.

THOMASTON - For $3 round-trip resident Veterans are now being offered rides to the VA Clinics in Winsted and Waterbury - St. Mary's Hospital, through the town's Senior mini-bus. The bus, with wheelchair accessibility, will leave for Winsted at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings, and for Waterbury at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays mornings. Vets will be picked up and dropped off at their homes. Veterans are asked to schedule their appointments at the clinic in the morning, but after 10:30 a.m.  For information about the clinics, please contact Veterans Affairs Officer John Dipesa at 283-0130. After appointments are scheduled, Veterans may contact the mini-bus at least one day in advance, at 601-7754 to schedule a ride. Any problems, contact Lorraine Babb, Social Services director, at 283-0756. (Please note, the bus to Newington and West Haven is a separate service).

Advisory Council

THOMASTON - Thomaston High School will host a series of informational meetings for parents of THS students in grades 7-12 these meetings will be held in the THS library at 7 p.m. on the following Thursday, May 12.
 

Happy Trails with Happy Travelers

THOMASTON - Trips planned for the Thomaston Happy Travelers for the 2005 year are:

May 9-12 - Tulip time in Ottawa, Canada $360 per person, need confirmation as soon as possible.
May 23 - The Black Watch, Canada's royal highland regiment from Montreal. will perform at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Experience a delicious lunch featuring a choice of roast turkey or New England scrod at Delaney House. The cost of the trip is $57 per person. The bus departs at 9 a.m. and returns home at 5:45 p.m.
June 8 -  Lobster Feast at the Log Cabin $70 per person including entertainment, etc.
July 26 -  Twin Lobster special at Hu-Ke Lau $61 per person.
August 28 - Experience the St. Anthony Feast in Boston with Harbor Cruise. Cost is $50 per person.
September 11 - "Menopause" the musical is showing in Boston. A deposit of $25 is due with sign up, and balance is due by August 5. The total cost is $70 per person.
September 12-16 -  San Antonio Getaway etc, Insurance recommended, $1099 per person with Collette Tour.
October 7-17 - Mount Rushmore, 11 day $749 per person with Diamond Tour. Need commitment on this trip, need 35 people to go.

Senior Center Spring Schedule

THOMASTON - The Thomaston Senior Citizen Council announces its Spring Schedule of Events:    

  • The Pool Room - is open Mondays through Fridays (excluding holidays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Senior Center (back room). Call Vinnie at 283-8617. Pool lessons for men and women are offered Fridays, 1 p.m. through April only.
  • Creative Writing
  • - is offered Mondays from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Senior Center.
  • Cards and Crafts - is offered Mondays from 12 to 3 p.m. to men and women at the Senior Center.
  • Yoga - will run on Mondays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and will be held in the Community Room. Men and women are welcome.    
  • Intermediate Line Dancing - will be held Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room.
  • Bingo - Tuesdays at 1 p.m., in Clare Hall at Green Manor.
  • Bowling - will be held Wednesdays at 1 p.m. at Thomaston Lanes.
  • Senior Meetings - Followed by refreshments will be held every other Thursday. Speakers are planned for most meetings.

  Mini-bus service for doctors visits and shopping will be provided Tuesdays and Thursdays. You must call 24 hours in advance at (860) 601-7754 or 283-0756. For more information, call Mary S. Reynolds, Program Coordinator, at 283-9344.

Bargain Shop

THOMASTON - The Bargain Shop is now open Fridays from noon to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a final winter clearance sale going on. Spring clothing is now on the racks, reasonably priced. The shop, located in the basement of the old firehouse next to Town Hall/Opera House, is operated by volunteers in supports of adult and children's programs at the Thomaston Public Library.
  For information about making a donation, contact the library at 283-4369. Donations may also be dropped off during hours that the Bargain Shop is open, or in the mornings prior to opening. Please do not leave donations at the door during closed hours.

Woman's Club Writes To Military

THOMASTON - The Thomaston Woman's Club is sponsoring a letter writing campaign to active members of the military from Thomaston. This also includes friends and family of Thomaston residents. If you know of someone in the military and would like letters written to them please send their address and name to the Thomaston Woman's Club, C/O Barbara Albert, 26 Karen Drive, Thomaston, Ct 06787.

Discover Tuscany

WATERTOWN - On November 8 Janet O'Donnell is running a trip to Italy through Collette Tours. The trip will be nine days in length with 12 meals. Some of the places they will visit are Rome, Assisi, Basilica of St. Francis, Florence, Siena, Pisa, Luca, and the Uffizi Museum. They will be staying in the resort thermal spa town of Montecatini Terme There will be a winery tour and a Tuscan feast on this tour. The The cost is $1,799 per person for double occupancy. It is $2,149 for a single room and $1,769 per person for a triple room. If you are interested, you can call Janet at (860) 274-6176. The fee includes round trip air, hotel transfers, fuel tax and departure tax.

Softball Tryouts

TERRYVILLE/PLYMOUTH - Tryouts and interviews for the 2005 season of The Mike Glowa Babe Ruth Softball League for girls ages 13-16 will be held April 30 at the Main Street School, Rte. 6, Terryvillle, from 2-4 p.m. The league is open to all girls from Terryville/Plymouth, Bristol, Thomaston, Burlington and Harwinton, This is a recreational league and any talent level is accepted. Plymouth Family Resource Center

TERRYVILLE/PLYMOUTH - The Resource Center offers programs for all families in town with the twin goals of strengthening the family and strengthening the bond between the family and the school. Below is a list of some of our programs/activities, please call the FRC at 283-6167 to join us or if you need more information!
Activities:
  Friends Playgroups - Choose from groups Monday through Friday. Playtime, circle time (stories, games, songs, etc) and snack for parents and children 0-5.
   Plymouth/CT Bound - Playgroups enjoy once a month field trip to CT fun spots.
  Terrific Threes - FRC and Plymouth Center Staff will teach a movement class for three year olds incorporating Nursery Rhymes and lots of fun!
   Fabulous Fours - Four year olds have the opportunity to explore in a preschool classroom, share with friends, and get ready for kindergarten.
   Camera Club - Fourth grade students meet to learn photography fun!
   PCS Press - Fifth grade club produces a monthly newsletter.
   Kid Kitchen - Fourth and fifth grade children in Plymouth Center School's After School Care are invited to cook in our kitchen.
   Parent Advisory Team - A Board of Parents discuss the workings, goals and future plans of the FRC.
  Parents as Teachers - Our Family Advocates offer once a month Home or Center visits to families to support parents as their child's first teacher.
   Brain Brunch - Bring your lunch, learn, and share your tips/suggestions on a variety of parenting topics (kids are welcome to play quietly in the room).
   Family Nights - Activity Nights, such as Literacy Nights, are scheduled to provide the whole family with opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun.
   A variety of classes are offered throughout the year for parents and child care providers on such topics as Red Flags in Development, Surviving the Toddler Years, ect.

Junior Women's Club Invite's You

BETHLEHEM - The Bethlehem Junior Women's Club invites any woman interested in joining the club to come and meet us! Monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the Library Leever Room. An informal gathering begins at 7 p.m. The Bethlehem Junior Women's Club is a fun way to work together to make Bethlehem a better place in which to live.

Bethlehem Animal Control

BETHLEHEM - The Bethlehem Animal Control Officer is conducting a town-wide dog survey. As per the State of Connecticut, Section 22-349-1, the purpose of this survey is to check rabies vaccinations and licenses.
   All dogs older than 3 months must have current vaccinations for rabies: all dogs older than 6 months must be licensed. Fines are $120 for any unvaccinated dog and $60 for any unlicensed dog. There is still time to license your dog without having an infraction issued.
   The Town Clerk's Office is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Any questions should be directed to the Animal Control Officer at 266-4111
.
 

Town of Bethlehem Senior Shuttle

BETHLEHEM - All Bethlehem residents 60 years of age or older are eligible for the Senior Shuttle Service. Passengers must fill out an information sheet which may be obtained at the Selectman's Office, Bethlehem Town Hall, or from the Shuttle Driver on Tuesdays through Fridays between 10:00 a.m. and noon.
   The shuttle provides transportation service for medical appointments, shopping, banking and recreational trips. 24 HOUR NOTICE REQUIRED. For more information and complete passenger guidelines, please call the Senior Line at (203) 266-6699. Leave a message with your name and phone number.

Festival Tickets

WATERBURY - Tickets are on sale now for the fourth annual "Hotter Than Heck Fest," to be held April 29, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriot Hotel in Waterbury. The event benefits Waterbury Youth Services, a non-profit social service organization serving children and families.
  The "Hotter Than Heck Fest,"  showcases 30 or more food purveyors from throughout Connecticut offering a mouth-tingling array of spicy food samples. Tickets are $35 per person and include all food and 2 drink tickets. For tickets, sponsor opportunities or advertising information contact Sheree Marcucci at Waterbury Youth Services (203) 573-0264.

Creativity Time

WATERBURY -The perfect antidote to the long winter cold is "Creativity Time," a once-a-month workshop that will bring participants all the way through spring with lots of exciting hands-on activities at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury.
  Margaret Demarino, coordinator of the popular series, Creativity Safari, will lead Creativity Time, a drop-in arts program for kids ages 5-15, friends and parents are also welcome to attend. The programs will be held amidst the paintings and sculptures of the museum's art galleries. Everyone will create themed projects inspired by the artwork and the seasons.
   A spring vacation improve workshop will take place Saturday, May 14 will be based on the museum's  exhibit  "Building Waterbury: The Art of Architecture."  Each workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5 per person. WATERBURY - Applications for the Waterbury Olympian Club Scholarship for high school student athletes graduating in June 2005, are available in the guidance offices of the following schools: Sacred Heart, Holy Cross, Woodland, Wilby, Crosby, Kennedy, Kaynor Tech, St. Margaret McTernan, Cheshire, Watertown, and Thomaston. Students from these schools may also obtain an application by sending an email to olympianclub@ sbcglobal.net with "Application Request" and the high school name in the subject line.
